Diablo 120 embodies the Gryphon spirit and performance at an affordable price point.
The Diablo 120 is an upgrade from it’s predecessor and remains at the top of performance list. Gryphon recognized the need for an integrated amplifier that still possessed the same audio quality true of it’s name.
In 2009, Gryphon released the Atilla and it did not disappoint audiophiles. Hi-Fi magazine said it was, “Easily up there with the very best,” and French Haute Fidelité considered it a, “Best Buy.” After it’s long run, Gryphon added some much desired enhancements to its cornerstone product and introduced the audio world to the Diablo 120.
The Diablo 120 displays minimalist styling with a masculine edge in its brushed aluminium housing and is finished with a black face plate. In true Gryphon style, the Diablo’s construction features contrasting angles and interlocking blocks of acrylic and brushed aluminium.
Assembled in Denmark, the Diablo 120 inherited the dual-mono circuitry, ultra-short signal path, gold-plated printed circuit boards, minimal internal wiring, PTFE-insulated sockets and proprietary binding posts used in our flagship models. The finest components were hand picked and tested for premium sound quality, reliability and thermal stability. Resistors used in the Atilla were upgraded to non-inductive resistors for the new Diablo 120.
The Diablo is essentially two independent mono devices to decreased crosstalk as well as interchannel interaction. Only the AC power cable and Holmgren toroidal transformer share electricity between channels. Also included is a custom 1,200 VA transformer which provides substantial heft with discrete secondary windings for left and right channels. Each channel is fed by its own 60,000 µF capacitor bank. Diablo’s output power is 20% greater than it’s predecessor the Atilla. Also, heatsink surface area was increased to match the increase in power. The Diablo 120 is equipped with two Sanken transistors and can drive loudspeaks with ease.
It utilizes a microprocessor controlled passive attenuator for transparent colume control. The 46 step relay puts a max of six resistors in the signal path for the purest of sound. A vacuum fluorescent display was chosen rather that traditional LED display to allow more space for a larger font. Both the display and control circuits and independently powered by a separate transformer to reduce noise contamination. Front panels are are controlled via touch.
The Diablo 120 includes a single balanced and four single-ended inputs and multiple menu configuration options including: max volume settings, source labeling, and isolated A/V bypass to integrate with a multi-channel audio system.
The unit may be fitted (at any time) with a Gryphon DAC PCM/DSD module. This adds four digital inputs (USB, balanced AES/EBU 115 Ω, TOSLink optical and BNC S/PDIF 75 Ω). Via USB, the Diablo 120 DAC module can process PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz as well as DSD (on Windows OS up to DSD512, on Mac OS up to DSD128, on Linux OS up to DSD128 DoP); via BNC S/PDIF and AES/EBU inputs up to192 kHz/32-bit PCM and via TOSLink up to 96 kHz/24-bit PCM. Format compatibility of the various inputs is subject to change without notice.
